MOUTH

MOUTH

  • In human anatomy,the mouth is the first portion of the alimentary canal that receives food and produces saliva. 
  • An external opening in the head, through which admit food and emit communicative sounds.
  • The cavity behind it containing the means of biting and chewing and the vocal organ.
  • In addition to its primary role as the beginning of the digestive system.
  • In human, mouth also plays a significant role for communication, while primary aspects of the voice are produced in the throat, the tongue, the lips, and jaw are also needed to produced the range of sounds in human language.
  • The mouth consists two region, the vestibules and the oral cavity proper.
  • The mouth normally moist, is lined with a mucous membrane, and contains the teeth.
  • The lips mark the transition from mucous membrane to skin, which covers most of the body.





STRUCTURE-
  • The mouth, consists of  2 region, the vestibule and the oral cavity proper.
  • The vestibule is the area between the teeth, lips and cheeks.
  • The oral cavity is bounded at the sides and in front by the alveolar process(containing the teeth) and at the back by the isthmus of the fauces.
  • Its roof is formed by hard palate t the front, and a soft palate at the back.
  • The uvula projects downwards from the middle of the soft palate at its back.
  • The floor is formed by the mylohyoid muscles and is occupied mainly by the tongue.
  • A mucous membrane- the oral mucus, lines the sides and under surface of the tongue to the gums, lining the inner aspect of the jaw(mandible).
  • It receives the secretions from the sub mandibular and sublingual salivary glands.




FUNCTION-
  • The mouth plays an important role in eating, drinking, breathing and speaking.
  • Humans have sucking reflex since infancy or they born, by which they instinctively known to suck for nourishment using their lips and jaw.
  • The mouth also helps to chewing and biting the food.


A male mouth can hold, on average, 71.2 ml, while a female mouth holds 55.ml
